The Gleaner

Although published under several name variations, such as the The Canadian Gleaner, The Huntingdon Gleaner, and simply The Gleaner. The Gleaner is the only newspaper in the Chateauguay Valley to have served our community from the mid-19th Century -- when Robert Sellar produced the first issue in 1863. The newspaper has kept our community informed about ourselves, our province, our country and our world.

Although some issues or pages are missing and likely will never be recovered, the CVHS has a complete set of digital images all the issues of The Gleaner and you are welcome to request copies. The CVHS also has many bound copies of the original newspapers that can be access at our archives.

Digital versions of The Gleaner can be found on the National Library and Archives of Québec website.

Indexes to Births, Marriages, Death Notices and Other Announcements

Although indexing has not been completed for all editions of The Gleaner, almost 75% of the issues have been indexed for genealogical researchers. When reviewing the indexes, do keep in mind that not all families submitted information to newspapers and your family may not appear.

For announcements published in The Gleaner from 1863 to 1951, we provide thanks to the late Bill Henderson who worked diligently using his own microfilm reader. These extracts can be found on the Huntingdon County GenWeb Site.
For announcements published in The Gleaner from 1984 to 2008, we provide thanks to the late Burt Lang who also worked diligently using his own microfilm reader. His index of announcements can be found at Gleaner Index 1984-2008.
